Plainfield Fire Protection District launches “Keep the Wreath Red” holiday safety campaign
Vito Bonomo Fire Chief | Plainfield Fire Protection District

The Plainfield Fire Protection District has announced its participation in the annual “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign, aimed at promoting fire safety during the holiday season. The initiative will run from December 1, 2025, through January 2, 2026.

As part of the campaign, each of the district’s four fire stations will display a wreath illuminated with red lights. If a fire related to holiday decorations occurs within the district, one red bulb on a wreath will be replaced with a white bulb. The district stated that its goal is to keep all bulbs red by encouraging safe practices among residents.

To help prevent fires, the district offered several safety tips for community members. These include using caution with candles and keeping them away from pets and children; maintaining space heaters at least three feet from fabrics and plugging them directly into outlets; using fireplace screens to contain sparks; having chimneys and vents inspected regularly; scheduling annual furnace maintenance; testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms; keeping natural Christmas trees well-watered without chemical sprays; avoiding overloaded extension cords; and unplugging holiday lights before leaving home or going to sleep.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District concluded its announcement by wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season.
