Plainfield North ADs earn top honors from Illinois association

In a notable achievement for Plainfield North High School and the Illinois Athletic Directors Association (IADA), Athletic Director Ron Lear and Assistant Athletic Director George Sam have been honored as IADA Division 3 Athletic Director and Assistant Athletic Director of the Year, respectively. This marks a historic first for both the school and the association.

The IADA annually acknowledges exceptional athletic leadership across seven divisions in Illinois. Division 3, which encompasses 125 schools, selects its awardees through nominations and votes from fellow athletic directors within the division. The winners were officially recognized at the IADA annual banquet held at Embassy Suites in East Peoria during their May conference.

This is the first instance where both honors have been awarded to individuals from District 202 and from the same school in IADA's history. "I am extremely honored to receive this award and represent Plainfield North," stated Lear, who plans to retire at the end of this school year. He expressed gratitude towards the IADA for their mentoring efforts and acknowledged his peers' support, saying, "For them to vote us in is amazing."

The awards highlight not only individual achievements but also emphasize the leadership culture within PNHS's athletic programs. Lear remarked on sharing this honor with Sam: “This is a high honor, and to share it with Mr. Sam makes it even more special." Sam will be succeeding Lear as athletic director next year.

Sam expressed his appreciation for being named Assistant Athletic Director of the Year alongside Lear. "His leadership and guidance have been instrumental in my growth," he said, acknowledging the strong foundation that has been laid for PNHS's athletic program.

PNHS principal Ross Draper commended both leaders: “North’s school community is proud of Ron and George for winning these awards." Draper highlighted Lear's impending retirement as an opportunity to celebrate his dedication over the years.
