Plainfield Foundation awards Horizon Grants to twelve District 202 juniors

Twelve juniors from District 202 high schools have been awarded Horizon Grants by the Plainfield Foundation for Excellence. These grants will fund summer learning experiences aimed at expanding their academic pursuits and exploring personal interests.

The students can utilize the grants for various activities such as workshops, classes, field studies, internships, or conferences during the summer before their senior year. "It fills us with pride and hope to support our students through the Horizon Grant program, because every grant is a step closer to helping them turn their dreams into reality," stated Margie Bonuchi, Chair of the Foundation for Excellence.

The recipients include Harmony Amegashie from Plainfield East High School who plans to attend a medical prep program at Prairie View A&M University; Megan Beintum from Plainfield South High School attending an engineering camp at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; and Ray Brunsting from Plainfield High School Central-Campus attending an architecture program at the University of Illinois Chicago West Campus.

Other awardees are Charles Hidalgo also from Plainfield East High School who will join a medical seminar at Northwestern University; Eryn Hodge from Plainfield North High School attending The American Legion Auxiliary Illini Girls State; Zoe Lee from Plainfield East High School participating in a STEM program in Massachusetts; Emily Martin also from Plainfield North completing a nurse assistant program; Grace Newberry again from Central-Campus exploring civil engineering at Purdue University; Carson Payne also from North joining a computer engineering camp in Milwaukee; Lily Pyatt furthering her acting skills through a fine arts clinic at Urbana-Champaign; Alice Rodney interning with NASA in Ohio; and Chloe Vasilakis joining an engineering camp at Urbana-Champaign.

Since its inception in 1983, the Foundation has contributed around $1.2 million towards supporting District 202 students and staff through various initiatives including scholarships and special funding. It has also supported programs like the District Art Gallery and leadership initiatives for high school students.
