Evan Margalus, a senior at Plainfield East High School (PEHS) and student at Wilco Area Career Center, secured a gold medal in Welding at the State SkillsUSA competition held in Peoria from April 24 to 26. This achievement makes him eligible for the National Leadership and Skills Conference scheduled from June 23 to June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia.
SkillsUSA is a state and national membership association that serves students in middle, high school, and college who are preparing for careers in technical, trade, and skill service occupations.
Several students from District 202 schools participated in the event, competing in various leadership categories. From Plainfield High School-Central Campus, participants included Isabella Baez (senior, EMT), Thomas Coleman (junior, Firefighting), Nicolas Jurkas (junior, Welding), Jake Michel (senior, Welding), Nate Perricone (junior, Welding), Harleyquinn Piekosz (senior, Automobile Maintenance and Light Repair), and Ryan Ricci (senior, Welding).
Representing Plainfield South High School were Elora Jaecks (senior, Crime Scene Investigation) and James Poulos (senior, EMT). From Plainfield North High School, Jacob Cavlovic (senior, Welding) and Ayanna West (senior, Criminal Justice) competed in the event.
Plainfield East High School was represented by participants Evan Margalus (senior, Welding), Stephanie Carranza (senior, Crime Scene Investigation), Mark Kosmach (senior, Criminal Justice), Amelia Markowski (senior, Firefighting), Kenneth Quintero (senior, Firefighting), Jazlyn Sison (senior, Crime Scene Investigation), and Nathaniel Woods (senior, Firefighting).
