The District 202 Board of Education has finalized a three-year agreement with the Association of Plainfield Teachers (APT) union. This contract aims to enhance the district's ability to attract and retain skilled staff by offering competitive employment packages.
On March 11, 2025, during a special meeting, the board approved the new contract after APT members ratified it on March 6. The union represents over 2,000 teachers and other personnel such as social workers and school psychologists.
The agreement introduces differentiated raises designed to ensure that all employees receive wages that keep District 202 competitive in recruiting and retaining staff. This decision follows a benchmarking study involving 18 school districts aimed at maintaining competitiveness in the job market.
A significant market adjustment is included in the first year of the contract, with subsequent raises linked to the consumer price index. "This contract marks a significant milestone for District 202," said Dr. Glenn Wood, Superintendent of Schools for District 202. He emphasized that fair compensation and sustainable financial practices position the district well to meet evolving needs.
District 202 has shown improved financial stability through careful budgeting and strategic choices, enabling increased investment in employee compensation while preserving financial health. Board President Rod Westfall expressed gratitude towards APT leadership for their commitment during negotiations: “I thank the Association of Plainfield Teachers leadership for its dedication, hard work and good-faith negotiations.”
Steve Jepsen, APT President, described the agreement as beneficial for both parties and acknowledged all involved for their cooperative efforts: “The contract was a win for both sides.” He encouraged other districts to observe their collaborative approach: “Other districts should take note of the great working relationship we have with each other."
In May 2024, another three-year deal was approved between the Board of Education and the Plainfield Association of Support Staff (PASS).
