Student science Olympiad teams from Plainfield East and North high schools achieved notable success at a recent regional tournament. The Waubonsie Valley Science Olympiad Regional Tournament, held on March 1, 2025, saw participants from both schools secure top positions in various categories.
From Plainfield East High School (PEHS), juniors Kyleah Edison and Beatrice Ordeneza won first place in the Write It Do It category. Additionally, sophomore Ira Chakraborty and junior Aleena Yousuf claimed first place in Optics.
Plainfield North High School (PNHS) also celebrated victories with senior Omer Mescioglu and junior Patricia Botnari winning first place in Anatomy & Physiology. Mescioglu, alongside senior Sakina Rizvi, also secured first place in Microbe Mission.
Several other students qualified for the state level competition: From PEHS, Kyleah Edison and Ira Chakraborty took second place in Astronomy; Zoe Lee and Aleena Yousuf earned third place in Materials Science; Edison and Ordeneza placed third in Robot Tour; Charlie Hidalgo and Yousuf came fourth in Chemistry Lab; Lee and Ordeneza were fourth in Disease Detectives; Lee, Edison, and Ordeneza finished fourth in Experimental Design.
From PNHS, Makayla Oberg and Nyla Rizvi secured second place in Write It Do It; Prakul Madaan and Sakina Rizvi placed second in Helicopter; Patricia Botnari and Kaitlyn Gaszak earned third place in Entomology; Botnari and Gaszak took fourth place in Fossils; Oberg and Rizvi came fourth in Optics; Carson Payne placed fourth both in Robot Tour and Wind Power.
These students will advance to compete at the Illinois Individual Science Olympiad State Tournament scheduled for April 26, 2025, at McHenry County College.
