District 202 has announced that an eighth period will be added to the high school day starting this fall. This initiative aims to enhance learning opportunities and better meet student needs, with input from teachers and the community.

The high school day will maintain its current start time of 7:05 a.m. and end at 2:10 p.m. The change aligns with the District Strategic Plan's goals, focusing on academic achievement, student well-being, and increased opportunities.

Key benefits of the expanded schedule include more access to elective courses in arts, technology, languages, and other areas of interest. It also provides additional academic support for students needing extra help or wishing to deepen their understanding in core subjects. Furthermore, it enhances career exploration through internships, career-technical education, and industry certification programs.

Feedback from community surveys and strategic planning meetings played a significant role in driving this change. The goal is to provide equitable offerings across all four high schools while preparing students for college and careers.

The Association of Plainfield Teachers (APT) collaborated closely with district administration to ensure the new schedule supports both professional needs and student success. Steven Jepsen, President of APT Union, stated that this move expands opportunities for supporting student growth towards college and career readiness.

Board of Education President Rod Westfall highlighted the development of 24 additional elective courses as part of this commitment to continuous improvement. School counselors are already assisting students in selecting their schedules for the upcoming year.
