District 202 will introduce an eighth period to its high school day starting this fall. The adjustment is part of the district's effort to enhance learning opportunities and address the needs of students, with support from teachers and the community.
The school day will continue to start at 7:05 a.m. and end at 2:10 p.m., maintaining its current duration. The change aligns with the District Strategic Plan's goals, focusing on academic achievement, student well-being, and increased opportunities for students.
The new schedule aims to meet the evolving needs of 21st-century learners by adding class periods, providing more collaborative planning time for teachers, and offering additional student support. Key benefits include increased access to elective courses in arts, technology, languages, and other interest areas; additional academic support for students needing extra help or wishing to deepen their understanding in core subjects; and enhanced career exploration opportunities such as internships and industry certification programs.
Feedback from community surveys, District Strategic Planning meetings, and various community groups prompted this move towards an eight-period day. Administrators noted that these groups advocated for a schedule offering more equity across the four high schools while increasing college and career preparation opportunities.
The Association of Plainfield Teachers (APT) has been actively involved in planning the new schedule. "Our teachers are dedicated to the success of each student," said Steven Jepsen, Association of Plainfield Teachers Union President. "This is a great step forward for the district."
Board of Education President Rod Westfall commented on the district's commitment: “We are always striving to build a school environment that fosters learning, growth, and success.” He added that with 24 additional elective courses developed at the high school level, this change underscores their dedication to continuous improvement.
The new schedule will be implemented in fall 2025. School counselors are already assisting students in selecting their schedules for the upcoming year.
