The Plainfield Fire Protection District is set to participate once again in the "Keep the Wreath Red" campaign, a holiday fire safety initiative aimed at raising awareness about fire hazards during the festive season. The campaign will run from December 1, 2024, to January 2, 2025.
Each of the district's four fire stations will display a holiday wreath at their front. If a fire occurs due to holiday decorations, a red light on the wreath will be replaced with a white one. The objective is to maintain all lights red throughout the season.
To promote safety, several tips have been shared by the district:
- Exercise caution with lighted candles as they can be easily forgotten or knocked over.
- Ensure space heaters are placed away from curtains and other fabrics and plugged directly into an outlet.
- Use tempered glass or metal screens for fireplaces to prevent sparks from escaping.
- Regularly check chimneys and vents for creosote buildup.
- Have furnaces inspected annually for proper operation.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly and replace batteries if needed.
- Keep natural Christmas trees well-watered instead of relying on chemical sprays.
- Avoid overloading extension cords and unplug holiday lights when leaving home or going to sleep.
The Plainfield Fire Protection District extends wishes for a happy and safe holiday season to everyone.
